Mikhail Mering
Currently serving as the Assistant Chief Conductor and Music Director Maestro Julian Rachlin at the renowned Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra, Mikhail Mering is a Russian-born Israeli conductor and clarinetist blazing an extraordinary trail of musical excellence on the world’s grandest stages. Born in Moscow in 1991, Mering’s prodigious talents were nurtured from an early age, beginning with clarinet studies under the esteemed Professor Ivan Mozgovenko at the Gnessin Music School.
His dedication and skill earned him the highest honors (premier nommé à l’unanimité avec les félicitations du jury) upon graduating from the Conservatoire à Rayonnement Régional de Versailles, where he studied under Professor Philippe Cuper.
As a clarinetist, Mering has captivated audiences worldwide with his virtuosic performances in prestigious venues. His exceptional talent has been recognized through numerous accolades, including awards at the Jacques Lancelot International Clarinet Competition in Japan and the Béla Kovács International Clarinet Competition in Hungary.Mering is an Artist of Buffet Crampon and Vandoren, two of the most renowned names in clarinet artistry Mering’s passion for conducting took flight at the Moscow State Tchaikovsky Conservatory, where he formally completed his degree in 2018 under the guidance of Professor Vladimir Ponkin.
Inspired by the legendary Ilya Musin’s conducting school, Mikhail further honed his conducting prowess under the tutelage of the renowned Polish conductor and professor Michał Klauza. The conducting master classes with the professor Sophie Rachlin in Vienna deserve special mention, as they have had and continue to have a significant influence on the development of Mering’s conducting skills.
Between 2019 and 2022, Mering served as the conductor for the Bolshoi Theater Chamber Orchestra and Bolshoi Theater Wind Scene Orchestra. He worked as an assistant of maestro Tugan Sokhiev on critically acclaimed productions of Tchaikovsky’s Mazeppa and Mozart’s Don Giovanni. Maestro Sokhiev has had a paramount creative influence on the development of Mering’s conducting and musical knowledge.Mering’s rise to prominence continued in 2022 when he was appointed as the assistant maestro to Evan Rogister, principal conductor of the Washington National Opera, for a joint production of Richard Wagner’s Lohengrin by the Bolshoi Theater and Metropolitan Opera. Months later, he made a debut at the Bolshoi Theater, conducting performances of Mozart’s Der Schauspieldirektor and Telemann’s Pimpinone with resounding success.
In 2023, Mering added another feather to his cap by becoming a laureate of the 3rd prize at the prestigious 2nd Hong Kong International Conducting Competition. His achievements culminated in November 2023 when he was honored as a 3rd prize winner at the renowned Grzegorz Fitelberg International Conducting Competition. During his brief career, Mikhail has performed with orchestras such as the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra , the Bolshoi Theatre Symphony Orchestra, the Silesian Philharmonic Orchestra, the Hong Kong Sinfonietta, and many others. Future engagements include collaborations with the Polish Radio Orchestra in Warsaw, Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra, Filharmonia Śląska im. Henryka Mikołaja Góreckiego, Symphonic Orchestra in Philharmonic Wałbrzych, New European Strings Chamber Orchestra, Teatr Wielki – Opera Narodowa.
