Camila Barrientos

Camila Barrientos Ossio is the principal clarinet of the Orquestra Sinfônica Municipal de São Paulo and the co-founder and artistic director of the Bolivian Chamber Music Society (La Sociedad).

As an orchestral musician, she’s performed with the New York Philharmonic, the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, the Miami Symphony and the Simon Bolivar Symphony Orchestra, among others. She has appeared under the batons of some of the world’s finest conductors including Marin Alsop, Alondra de la Parra, Gustavo Dudamel, Valery Gergiev, Kurt Masur, Phillipe Entremont, Leonard Slatkin and Helmuth Rilling.

A passionate chamber musician, she was a member of the award-winning woodwind quintet The City of Tomorrow. With this ensemble, she championed many of the most challenging works written for woodwind ensemble, such as Franco Donatoni’s Blow, Luciano Berio’s Ricorrenze and David Lang’s Breathless. These last two are featured on the ensemble’s album Nature released by the Ravello Records label.

Camila has performed in venues all around the world, from Carnegie Hall to St. Peter’s Basilica, the Berlin Konzerhaus, Teatro Teresa Carreño in Caracas, LPR in New York City, Lake Titicaca in Bolivia and the Yokosuka Arts Center in Japan. As a member of the Orchestra of the Americas, she has toured Latin America and Europe multiple times. She is the principal clarinet of the MostArts Festival Orchestra in upstate New York, and has participated in festivals including the Music Academy of the West, Bolivia Clásica, Britten-Pears in the UK, Grafenegg Academy in Austria and Menton Festival in the south of France. Camila also held an artist residency at the Banff Center for Arts & Creativity in Canada.

She has given solo and chamber recitals at venues throughout the United States and Bolivia. These include the Santa Barbara Art Museum, the Dame Myra Hess Memorial Series, the Great Lakes Chamber Music Festival, Merkin Concert Hall, the German and Ukrainian Consulate in New York City and the Simón I. Patiño Cultural Center in Bolivia. An avid educator, Camila has delivered masterclasses at leading conservatories, universities and festivals including Berklee College of Music, Indiana University, San Francisco Conservatory, New England Conservatory, University of Oregon, EMESP Tom Jobim, Escola Municipal de

Música de São Paulo and Música Ocupa Ecuador Festival. She was also a guest lecturer at the World Creativity Day in Barcelona, Spain.

Born in Cochabamba, Bolivia, she started playing the clarinet at the age of 10 at the Instituto Laredo under the tutelage of Edward Wolf. When she turned 14, she attended the Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan, where she studied with Richard Hawkins and Nathan Williams. She received her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Clarinet Performance from the Manhattan School of Music studying with renowned clarinetist Mark Nuccio. She is the recipient of multiple awards including the Harold Wright Merit Award and the Leon Russianoff Award; and was awarded grants from the LCU Foundation and the New York Philharmonic.

Most recently, Camila won the Alumni Enterprise Award from the Music Academy of the West for her role creating Música para Respirar 24/7, a project of the Bolivian Chamber Music Society. Música para Respirar (Music to Breathe) provides free personalized concerts online and has reached over 6,500 people in 46 countries during the covid-19 pandemic.

Camila is based in São Paulo, Brazil, where she lives with her husband, trumpeter Bruno Lourensetto and their dog, Osita Ossio.
