Bruno BONANSEA

Solo clarinet of the Philharmonic orchestra of Rotterdam, Professor at Edgard Varèse Conservatory

Bruno Bonansea is a young multi-faceted musician. His exceptional career has led him to become one of the most brilliant clarinet players of his generation.

Bruno Bonansea’s musical career began in Trieux, France (a town in the Lorraine mining district), continued to the Metz Regional Conservatory, then to the Paris Conservatory (with Richard Vieille and Franck Amet), and then the Sorbonne in Musicology.

He was noticed very young by successively winning the European Music Award in Picardy, the Lions’ Club Musical Interpretation Award, and the Yamaha Music Foundation of Europe Award.

In 2006, he succeeded in entering the prestigious National Music Conservatory of Lyon, where he studied under his professors Jacques Di Donato, Nicolas Baldeyrou, and Robert Bianciotto. He completed his studies with his Master’s degree, distinguished with the highest honours.

Bruno Bonansea is currently solo clarinettist at the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, under the supervision of Yannick Nezet-Seguin.
Member of the French Youth Orchestra in 2004 and 2005, then hired in 2008 by the very prestigious Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester, he obtains his first position as solo clarinettist at the Picardy Orchestra in 2011, before entering the National French Orchestra under Daniele Gatti’s supervision in 2013.
He is also regularly invited to play for other orchestras, such as the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, in Amsterdam. His career brings him to perform in the finest places: The Vienna Musikverein, the Lucerne Konzersaal KKL, the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, or the Royal Albert Hall in London, under the supervision of conductors such as Seiji Ozawa, Bernard Haitink, Riccardo Mutti, Sir Colin Davis…

Bruno Bonansea is also a very active concert artist, as a soloist as well as in chamber music groups, and plays in many festivals, in France and abroad.
He is a founding member of Quintette K, a wind quintet with whom he won the Lyon International Chamber Music Award, and obtained third prize in the Henri Tomasi International Music Awards in Marseille.

Bruno Bonansea’s activities are not limited to the classical repertoire alone. He defends contemporary music and likes to work with composers, as he did with this recording. His energy and open mind always lead him to consider jazz, traditional, modern or improvised music. His memorable encounter with Jacques Di Donato was the opportunity for him to develop his taste for improvisation. He was also counselled by personalities such as Bernard Lubat, Camel Zekri, Bruno Chevillon and Louis Sclavis.

With the duos Klezrem’x (along with double-bass player Jéremy Bruyère) and Yati (with the flautist Julie Moulin), he regularly takes part in diverse original projects, which testify to his desire to explore the richness of music, of all types of music.

Bruno has also cultivated a passion for the visual arts, especially photography, which often leads him to be part of diverse projects, from photo sessions to the creation of an album cover, or website…

In 2016, he initiated the first “Echappées Musicales du Médoc”, as artistic director. This young festival’s vocation is to renew the traditional concert frame, by combining different artistic expression forms. The festival shows Bruno’s enthusiasm in wanting to break down the barriers of musical genres.
Bruno gives master classes in France and abroad and is currently professor at the Edgard Varèse Conservatory in Gennevilliers.
