Timothy SUN

Chairman of the Hong Kong Saxophone Ensemble

Macao-born saxophonist Timothy Sun began his music studies at the age of 7 as a violin player. He studied saxophone and clarinet with George Galway at the Ellen Wilkinson High School of Art in England since 1997, and in 2001 became the first Chinese saxophone and clarinet student of the Guildhall School of Music and Drama under a full scholarship from the UK Department for Education and Employment for his Bachelor’s degree, where his principal teachers were the world-renowned saxophonists John Harle and Christian Forshaw. He had also worked with clarinettist Julian Farrell and flautist Glen Martin and in 2006 completed his Master’s degree under a school scholarship.

Sun had given recitals at such venues as St Martin-in-the-Fields, Wigmore Hall, Barbican Centre and Southwark Cathedral, and his performances had been broadcast on BBC radio. Also a keen performer in contemporary music, various composers from around the world such as Francesco B Cilluffo and Matthew Knowles have written new works for him.

In recent seasons, Sun has appeared in more than 100 recitals and orchestral concerts in Asia and Europe with orchestras including Hong Kong Sinfonietta, Macau Orchestra, Macau Chinese Orchestra, ZheJiang Symphony Orchestra, ShenYang Symphony Orchestra, Hong Kong Festival Orchestra, New Music Ensemble, PanAsia Symphony Orchestra and the Macau Youth Symphonic band. He has also been interviewed by newspapers including the South China Morning Post, UK Chinese Times, Macao Daily and RTHK Radio 4, which broadcasted his live performance.

Sun is currently the Chairman of the Hong Kong Saxophone Ensemble and one of the artists of the “Buffet Crampon” Group.
