Louis DeMartino

A native of Staten Island, Louis DeMartino is currently the Principal Clarinetist of the Hawaii Symphony, the Portland Opera Orchestra, and the Oregon Ballet Theatre Orchestra. He is also the Principal Clarinetist of the Colorado Music Festival in Boulder, CO and he held the position of 2nd/Eb clarinetist of the Eugene Symphony in Oregon for 5 seasons. Louis also traveled to Auckland, New Zealand and performed as guest Principal Clarinet of the Auckland Philharmonia for 2 months. Louis performs regularly with many ensembles in the Portland area, including Third Angle Ensemble, 45th Parallel Ensemble, and the OrpheusPDX Opera orchestra. In addition, Louis is also the Clarinet Instructor on faculty at PaciOic University in Forest Grove, OR. Louis has performed with the Oregon Symphony, Vancouver (BC) Symphony, Astoria Music Festival, Britt Festival Orchestra, Kansas City Symphony, Boston Symphony Orchestra, Boston Pops Orchestra, Sarasota Orchestra, and Omaha Symphony, to name a few. His recording credits include the Kansas City Symphony’s Miraculous Metamorphosis and The Planets, Pink Martini and the Von Trapps’ Dream a Little Dream, Charles Nichols’ Multiplication of Machines, and a recording of chamber works by David Crumb entitled Red Desert. Louis was a member of the New World Symphony for three seasons and he was a member of the Chicago Civic Orchestra for one season. In addition, he performed for one year as the 2nd clarinetist of Orchestra Iowa in Cedar Rapids. In the past, Louis was a fellow at the Tanglewood Music Center and he was also a member of the New Fromm Players, a contemporary music ensemble in residence at Tanglewood. Other festivals include Spoleto USA in Charleston, SC and the AIMS Orchestra in Graz, Austria. Louis studied at the New England Conservatory with Craig Nordstrom where he received his Bachelor of Music in performance. He received his Master of Music from Rice University where he studied with Michael Webster. He also studied with Lawrie Bloom at Northwestern University. .
