Jonatan Rives Beneite

Clarinet Teacher at the Conservatory of Murcia

Spanish clarinetist Jonatan Rives was born in 1976 in Cox. His intellectually restless attitude makes him to embrace many different sides of an artist.

Jonatan, started to play clarinet when he was 8 years old and graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree from the Superior Conservatory of Music of Murcia in 1996 at the age of 19. He was awarded with the First prize in Clarinet and Chamber Music degree and also in subsequent competitions throughout the country.

At the Benidorm International Music Festival, when he was 17, Jonatan Rives was awarded with a scholarship to study at University of Southern California with Yehuda Gilad and Michelle Zukovsky. Yehuda became his main professor and mentor until today. He pursued the Advanced Studies Performance Degree at the University of Southern California. Additional studies have been carried out with and Mitchell Lurie, Colin Lawson, Anthony Pay, José L. Estellés, Guy Deplus or Burt Hara among others.

During his years of study at USC, he won the USC Concerto Competition. He was a prize winner at the 2001 Young Musician Foundation Competition and a Finalist at the 2000 Pasadena Competition.

Jonatan Rives has received several awards and grants from MEC of Spain, AIE Foundation, Bonny Foundation and other public and private foundations in Europe. Prize winner in seven International competitions, he is a former member from the YMF Debut Orchestra in Los Angeles, American Youth Symphony Orchestra, Spanish Young National Orchestra (JONDE), Murcia Region Youth Orchestra. He has performed under the baton of conductors like Luthz Kohler, Esa Pekka Salonen, Josep Pons, Jesús Lopez Cobos or Lionel Bringuer, just to mention a few of them.

He has performed Mozart Clarinet Concerto and Nielsen Concerto as a soloist many times, but there is a very special memory from the Debussy’s Premiere Rhapsodie recordings at Los Angeles back in 1999, conducted by Sergiu Comissiona.

Deeply involved into education at every level, since 2008, Jonatan most of his efforts go to the Conservatory of Music of Murcia management, a teaching center with more than 120 educators and more than a thousand and a hundred pupils, task that he will be carrying through until 2020.

During his time as headmaster so far, the conservatory has grown up to a 60% on student body terms and currently holds 4 orchestras, as an example of the magnitude. All the same, his main contribution has been the design and start-up of an “Integration Timetable Program”, which eases remarkably the harmonization between general and musical studies known as PHI. This program has changed dramatically the teachings of this center and has been emulated by many others around Spain.

He also spans a long and intense activity as clarinet professor. Since 2002 he works as a clarinet teacher in Murcia at its Conservatory. Furthermore, he has been invited as guest professor from centers such as the Thornton School of Music of Los Angeles at the University of Southern California and the Lamont School of Music at the University of Denver.

He has been invited as well as solo clarinet artist by many orchestras including lately the Orquesta Sinfónica de Castilla y León, based in Valladolid. His works as clarinetist have taken him to perform chamber concerts mainly in USA and Europe.

Another one of his roles is the cultural management, which he develops through the non-profit organization PerformArt, an association that boosts musical and educational activities. This activity gets bigger every year, and currently is working on an important development project for a Festival in 2020.

He is a mountain bike and running enthusiast, among other sports, and practice Bikram yoga.

He plays in B flat and A, a wonderful pair of Buffet Crampon Festival Clarinets, with Moening Barrels and a really pleasant Buffet Crampon RC E flat clarinet.
