Joris Roelofs

The Jazz Department of the Conservatorium van Amsterdam is proud to announce  the addition of Jazz Clarinet and Bass Clarinet Bachelor and Master studies to our degree offerings.

The faculty will consist of Joris Roelofs (photo) (improvisation classes), Marc Scholten (woodwind ensembles, technique, theory of education), Eric van Deuren (bass clarinet classical repertoire, contemporary techniques) and Harmen de Boer (clarinet classical repertoire).

Clarinet player and improvisation teacher Joris Roelofs is one of the most wellknown and successful alumni of the Conservatorium van Amsterdam. In 2003 he was the first non-American to receive the Stan Getz/Clifford Brown Fellowship Award in the US.

Among others, Joris has played with Brad Mehldau, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Christina Branco, Lionel Loueke, Lewis Nash, James Carter, Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, and the WDR Big Band. He has performed with Brad Mehldau at Carnegie Hall in New York and the Sanders Theatre in Boston. At the moment he features in Mehldau’s new project for a silent movie called “Salvation Hunters” (Von Sternberg).

Since 2008 he has been touring in Europe with his own projects including Aaron Goldberg, Ari Hoenig, Reginald Veal, Joe Sanders, Greg Hutchinson, Johannes Weidenmüller,  Ted Poor and Matt Pennman. As a sideman Joris has played at a large number of international jazz festivals and jazz clubs, all over the world.
