Marija Pavlovic

Artist-in-Residence with the Dubrovnik Symphony Orchestra

The renowned Croatian clarinetist Marija Pavlovic was born in Dubrovnik. She graduated from the Zagreb Music Academy after which she perfected her art at the Salzburg Mozarteum in the class of Alois Brandhofer. Additionally, she worked with Walter Boeykens, Ivo Lybeert and Pascal Moraguez. She received further musical advice through masterclasses with esteemed artists such as Radovan Vlatković, Péter Czaba, Hansjörg Schellenberger, Zakhar Bron, Eduard Brunner and Yehuda Gillad. Marija is the recipient of numerous awards that include the annual prize of the Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra and American Express prize for the most successful young musician of the year; the Würdigenpreis of the Austrian Ministry for Science and Culture (Vienna); 1st prize at the AudiMozart competition in Rovereto, Italy; the Poulenc Award at the International IBLA Grand Prize Competition in Ragusa, Italy. In 2011 she was honored with the Orlando prize at the Dubrovnik summer festival for her solo performance with Gli Archi Scaligeri, La Scala’s chamber orchestra. Her CD „music…friendship“ with collaborating pianist Martina Filjak received numerous discographic awards, including Croatia’s ‚Porin‘ award for the best album of the year. With the flutist Edith Van Dyck, she established a chamber ensemble „Focus“, which performs in various chamber ensembles. Focus’s new CD „Hidden Facts“ was released in 2018. In the last few years she has gained orchestral experience with many orchestras in Croatia, Austria, Belgium, France and the Netherlands (the Rotterdams Philharmonisch Orchestra, the Flemish Opera House, the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra, the Brabants Orchestra, the Opéra de Rouen Haute Normandie.. ).

A frequent partner in chamber music performances is the bassoonist Pieter Nuytten, and since 2009 she has worked extensively with Croatian pianist Martina Filjak. She has given a number of solo recitals and chamber music concerts at many festivals both at home and abroad, such as the Dubrovnik Summer Festival, the San Marco Festival in Zagreb, the Zagreb Summer Evenings, the Rishon Lezion in Israel, the Art Masters in St. Moritz, the Musique et Nature en Bauges in France, the Classic con Brio in Osnabrück, the Kasseler Musiktage, the Zomer van Antwerpen, the Podium Jonge Musici in Antwerpen, the Bozarsundays in Brussel, the Arbanassi Summer Music in Bulgaria, the Associazione Filarmonica Rovereto in Italy, the Seneffe Festival in Belgium…

She has made guest appearances in many European countries, as well as in the USA and in Israel. As a soloist, she has worked with distinguished orchestras and chamber ensembles in Croatia and elsewhere such as the Dubrovnik Symphony Orchestra, the Croatian Chamber Orchestra, the Zagreb Soloists, the Croatian Radiotelevision Symphony Orchestra, the Haydn Orchestra di Bolzano e Trento, the Montreal Chamber Orchestra, Gli Archi Scaligeri, the Rijeka Philharmonic Orchestra, the Brussel Chamber Orchestra, the Flanders Symphony Orchestra, the Montenegrin Symphony Orchestra… in 2018 she became „Artist-in-Residence“ with the Dubrovnik Symphony Orchestra and founded a new festival „Stradun Classic“.
