Victor de la Rosa

Teacher at the Royal Conservatory of Mallorca

Víctor enjoys a busy freelance career as an orchestral musician, chamber music, contemporary music specialist and pedagogue. He received his Bachelor Degree in performance at the ESMuC (Barcelona) and Master in Performance at the Royal College of Music of London with ‘Distinction-Exceptional’. He also specialised on bass clarinet with the late Harry Sparnaay, to whom received all his sheet music.

As an orchestral musician, Victor has been guest principal clarinet with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, Philharmonia Orchestra, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, Hallé Manchester, Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Cadaques Orchestra, Palau de les Arts Valencia Opera House & Liceu Barcelona Opera House. He has also played with the London Symphony Orchestra, Asian tours with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra and numerous productions as bass clarinet with the Liceu Opera House in Barcelona. Moreover, he has been member of festival orchestras such as Verbier, Castleton, Lucerne Academy, London Sinfonietta Academy and he played at the first YouTube Orchestra. All this experience has let him work with conductors such as Lorin Maazel, Pierre Boulez, Sir Simon Rattle, Kent Nagano, Sir Colin Davies, Sir Neville Marriner, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Daniele Gatti, Michael Tilson-Thomas, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Vladimir Jurowski, Andrés Orozco-Estrada, George Bemjamin, Christopher Hogwood and Gordan Nikolich.

Victor has been invited soloist with the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra, One Tree Hill Sinfonia in London, Mallorca Chamber Orchestra and CSMIB Wind Ensemble, to perform clarinet concertos by W.A. Mozart, Aaron Copland, Artie Shaw and Magnus Lindberg. At age of 17 he made his debut with the Mallorca Conservatoire’s orchestra playing the op.73 by C.M. von Weber.

A keen recitalist and chamber musician, he has played in venues such as the Royal Albert Hall, Palau de la Música Catalana, L’Auditori de Barcelona, Auditorio 400 of Queen Sofía Museum, Mendelssohn Remise in Berlin or Spïkeri Hall in Riga. He has been artist in residence both in La Pedrera (Gaudi’s House) and L’Auditori in Barcelona.

His love for contemporary music has let him premiere near 50 pieces for clarinet, bass clarinet, ensemble and chamber operas by composers such as Michael Beil, Dai Fujikura, Oscar Bianchi, Hèctor Parra, Raquel García-Tomás, Luis Codera-Puzo, among many others. As a soloist he has collaborated with IRCAM and he has played at the Lucerne Festival, Archipel Festival of Geneva, Cairo Contemporary Music Days, ‚Nous Sons‘ and ‚Sampler Series‘ at Barcelona Concert Hall, PHONOS Foundation, SGAE Barcelona’s Hall and Sincrònic Contemporary Music Festival of Lleida. In 2014 he covered Harry Sparnaay in the soloist role of the opera Why Poets? by Gerard Pape, along with John Kenny and Nicholas Isherwood. Victor is founder member of CrossingLines Ensemble, a reference for new creation in Spain.

As a pedagogue, he has lectured at the Royal College of Music and Cairo American University on extended techniques. He has recently given masterclasses in Hong Kong and he taught at Ithaca College and Dartmouth College in London. Currently, Victor is clarinet professor at the Balearic Islands Conservatoire and is the Artistic Director of the Mallorca Summer Academy. Victor is d’Addario Artist and Buffet Crampon Artist.
