Rodrigo Pires de Lima

Saxophone professor at the Lisbon Superior School of Music and Professor at the Lusíada University

Rodrigo Pires de Lima finished his Doctoral Degree, at the University of Minnesota (USA ) in May 2019. He also completed a Specialization (21stCentury Music for Saxophone) at the Conservatory of Strasbourg (France), a Master Degree in Music Education, Master in Music and he graduated in Music-Saxophone at the Lisbon Superior School of Music.

Pires de Lima Doctoral project, „The use of human echolocation in music“ -The first musical piece for people with visual impairment without resorting to braille as a reading aid, obtained prominence in several Media channels. Namely in the newspaper P.blico, RTP Not.cias, Di.rio de Not.cias, The World News, PORTUGALINEWS.EU, Not.ciasoaminuto.com, Brazil.Shafaqna.com, CLA.UMN.EDU, Ag.ncia Lusa (in interview format), R.dio Renascen.a (in interview format), DESTAK.PT, Porto Canal, Tutti Magazine USA (in interview format).

Currently, Rodrigo Pires de Lima is a Saxophone professor at the Lisbon Superior School of Music and Professor of Improvisation in Music therapy and Culture and Repertory in Music Therapy at the Lus.ada University.

Since 2003, Pires de Lima is given masterclasses in several conservatories and festivals such as at the Pražsk. konzervatoř (Czech Republic), Conservat.rio Regional de Ponta Delgada, Academia de Artes de Chaves, Conservat.rio d’Artes de Loures, Orfe.o de Leiria Conservat.rio de Artes, University of Minnesota (U.S.A), Conservat.rio de M.sica Joly Braga Santos, Conservat.rio de M.sica Lu.s Ant.nio Maldonado Rodrigues, U.M.N Marching Band (U.S.A), Conservat.rio de M.sica de Sintra, Sax@Sul Fest, Lira A.oriana (Azores), Est.gio de Orquestra da Guia, Conservat.rio de m.sica da metropolitana de Lisboa.

As a freelancer Rodrigo Pires de Lima collaborated with several groups and musicians on different projects, Orchestre Philharmonique de Strasbourg (France), Calouste Gulbenkian Fundation Orchestra, Lisbon Metropolitan Orchestra, Portuguese Symphonic Orchestra, Portuguese Chamber Orchestra, Cl.ssica do Sul Orchestra, Orchestre de Saxophone de Strasbourg (France), Saxof.nia Saxophone Quartet, Quatour de Saxophone de Strasbourg (France), Quarteto de Saxofones do Porto, Minnesota Varsity “Trio” (E.U.A), Tora Tora Big Band, Hot Clube Big Band, Portuguese Symphonic Band.

Pires de Lima was a Saxophone Soloist at the Lisbon National Guard Symphonic Band from 2004 to 2019. He was saxophone professor at the Silva Marques Regional Conservatory of Music and Dance, Lu.s Ant.nio Maldonado Rodrigues Conservatory and at the Lisbon Metropolitan Conservatory.

As a chamber music performer he collaborated with the Czech pianist and composer Zdenka Kosnarova as Duo 152, and together toured Europe and performed recitals that have included some original compositions.

In 2017, Pires de Lima embraced a new project, ELECTROVILLE JUKEBOX. This project blends improvisation, contemporary music, World music, electronic music, Portuguese composers and some originals. In 2018 Rodrigo Pires de Lima with Preston Duncan (saxophone) and Casey Rafn (piano) formed the „Trio“. This project is dedicated to the work of Portuguese and American composers. This trio ended the year of 2018 with a series of recitals in the U.S., ending the cycle with two concerts in New York, at the Manhattan School of Music and at the Buffet Showroom in Times Square.

Pires de Lima premiered several solo a chamber music pieces, “Sarabande” – White, Isadora; “ZOLA” – Cardoso, Luis; “Safari” – Osterhouse, Ben; “Weiss (442Hz-453hHz)” – Pires de Lima, Rodrigo; “The Burning Signals” – Spreiter, Reid; „Daniela 3.0“- Pires de Lima, Rodrigo; “Guigo” – Almeida, Alexandre; “Primavera III”- Kosnarova, Zdenka; “Venio Domine”- Kosnarova, Zdenka; “Saxophone Quartet”- Barroso, Marco.

He combines his passion for chamber music with an active career as a soloist, performing solo concerts all across the country and abroad, recording premieres for saxophone and orchestra.

Recently, Rodrigo Pires de Lima is dedicating some of his time to the composition of pieces with the focus on the saxophone. In 2013 he composed “Weiss (442Hz- 453hHz)” for Alto saxophone solo, in 2017 „Daniela 3.0“, for Baritone saxophone, electric guitar, percussion and electronics and in 2019 “Oak Grove” for saxophone quartet.

Rodrigo Pires de Lima is a BUFFET CRAMPON and an Eugene Rousseau Mouthpieces artist.
