Bruno Philipp

International concertist, Professor at Music Conservatory Blagoje Bersa in Zagreb

Bruno Philipp (Zagreb, 1978) graduated clarinet at the Music Academy in Zagreb in the class of prof. Milko Pravdić. During three years in Paris he was studing with prof. Jean-Marc Volta and prof. Alain Damiens and was attending master classes by famous pedagogues and soloists such as: Guy Deplus, Michel Arrignon, Walter Boeykens, Anthony Pay, Pascal Moragues and others.

He won the 1st prize at inaugural Croatian Competition for Young Musicians ‘Papandopulo’ 2012 in Zagreb and was laureate of international competition Gheorghe Dima in Cluj-Napoca, Romania, in 2011 as well as the winner of the special prize for the best interpretation of Romanian piece (Carnyx) offered by the Union of Composers and Musicologists in Romania. In 2009 he was appointed solo clarinetist of the Croatian Radio Symphonic Orchestra.

Bruno Philipp is actively involved in classical, contemporary and ethno music and cooperates closely with Croatian composers whose works he regularly performs. He premiered two concertos for clarinet and strings written by Olja Jelaska and Nikša Njirić.

With Rucner String Quartet he is successfully performing klezmer, tango and contemporary pieces such as ‘Un souffle sur nos ames’ by French composer Vincent Alexandre Jockin. He has given numerous recitals and has performed as a soloist with the Croatian Radio Symphony Orchestra, Tamburica Radio Orchestra, Croatian Chamber Orchestra, Zadar Chamber Orchestra, Zagreb Soloist ensemble, Philharmonic ‘Transylvania’ and Orchestra of the Music Academy.

In 2013 label Croatia Records published his first compact disc entitled “The Jewish musical legacy in the sound and the words” which he recorded with trio Solenza. His second compact disc ‘Music ethno box’ published in 2016 won the nominatoon for the best non classical album. He teaches clarinet at Music Conservatory Blagoje Bersa in Zagreb. His music activity is permanently associated with the national folklore ensemble Lado, trio Solenza, Zagreb wood wind trio and wind ensemble Camerata Cantilly. As a member of Croatian Society of Music Artists he is regulary invited as a member of jury at nationals and internationals clarinet competitions.
