Martin Scalona

First Clarinet, Opera and Ballet Orchestra in Mexico

Born in Rosario, Argentina, and Mexican citizen since 2007, Martin started his clarinet studies at the age of 10. He soon took lessons with Professor Mariano Frogioni in Buenos Aires. At 16 he was already first clarinet in Rosario Municipal Chamber Orchestra. As soloist he has performed with the Camerata Gstaad (Switzerland), La Plata Chamber Orchestra, Rosario Provincial Symphony, Rosario Municipal Chamber Orchestra, Guanajuato Symphony, Camerata of Coahuila, Heredia Symphony (Costa Rica), Mexico City Juvenile Symphony and Santa Fe Juvenile Symphony (tour Argentina- Brazil 1994).Scalona won the National Contest of wind instrument soloists of La Plata (Argentina) in 1994 and the National Contest of wind instrument soloists of Bahia Blanca (Argentina) in the same year. Before leaving Argentina, he worked as first clarinet in San Luis Symphony Orchestra (Argentina), and as second substitute clarinet of the Buenos Aires Philharmonic Orchestra.In 1995, Martin was accepted in the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia, United States, where he would study with professor Donal Monatanaro, soloist clarinetist associated of the Philadelphia Orchestra. Accordingly he received a scholarship to study abroad by the Ministry of Culture of Argentina. He was a member of the Orchestra in residence and of several Chamber groups in the prestigious festival of Verbier, Suiza (1998 and 1999)After getting his degree in 1999, he continued his studies at Duquesne University under the guidance of Michael Rusinek, soloist clarinet of Pittsburgh Orchestra. During this period in the United States, Martin worked as second substitute clarinet with the Philadelphia Orchestra in 1997 and with the Pittsburgh Orchestra during 1999 and 2000.He worked privately and doing Master Classes with professors David Weber (NBC Orchestra, Metropolitan Opera), Burt Hara (principal, Minneapolis Symphony), Stanley Drucker (principal New York Philarmonic), Michel Arrignon (Paris Conservatory), Anthony Gigliotti (Philadelphia Orchestra), Richard Stolzman (international soloist) and Paul Meyer (international soloist). He had the opportunity of working with directors as important as Kurt Masur, Simon Rattle, Andre Previn, James Levine, Otto-Werner Muller, Yuri Temirkanov, David Zinman, Wolfgang Sawallisch, Sir Neville Marriner, Kent Nagano, Sir Andrew Davis and Robert Spano, and with artists such as Plácido Domingo, Barbara Hendrix, Rennée Fleming, Mischa Maisky, Radu Lupu, Peter Serkin, Gary Grafman, Leon Fleischer, Alberto Lysy, Pamela Frank, Peter Wiley, Juan Diego Flórez, Hilary Hahn, Ramón Vargas and Lang-Lang among others.Between the years 2000 and 2004 he performed as first soloist clarinet in the Mexico City symphony orchestra. In December 2006, with an overall average of 3.96 from 4 grade points, he got a Master´s degree from the Music Faculty of Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, United States. In March 2007, through an international competitive contest, join the Fine Arts Theater Orchestra in Mexico City. In 2008 toured Taiwan with the piece “The Soldier’s Tale” from Stravinsky and “Contrasts” by Bartok, along with the violinist Yi-Fang Huang and the pianist Hsing-Chwen Hsin. He also gave lectures in the “Chiao Tung” National University Musical Institute and in “Chung Hsing” National University. At the present time he teaches clarinet in the Fine Arts School of Toluca city. It is also good to mention that his outstanding students fill important artistic positions in a national level. In 2013, along with the Guanajuato Orchestra, he conducted the Latin American premiere of the Krystoff Penderecki Clarinet concerto. This presentation got nominated for the “Lunas del Auditorio” awards of 2013.In 2014 he performed the national premiere of Juan Trigos’ Clarinet Concerto along with the Coahuila Camerata. He directs the “Clarinetists International Encounter of Ixtapan de la Sal – Donald Montanaro” which is performed annually since 2013 in Mexico City and where the most prominent international clarinetists are present.
