Hakan Rosengren

Internationally-acclaimed clarinetist Håkan Rosengren has appeared as concerto soloist and in recital and chamber music all over Europe, the United States, and in Israel and Asia. As concerto soloist he has performed with European orchestras such as Lausanne Chamber Orchestra, Prague Philharmonic, Lisbon Metropolitan Orchestra, Porto Chamber Orchestra, Amadeus Chamber Orchestra, Slovakia Radio Symphony, Lithuanian National Symphony, Aukso Chamber Orchestra, Poznan Philharmonic, Bialystok Philharmonic, Polish Chamber Philharmonic, Opole Philharmonic, among others. In his native Sweden and other Nordic countries he has appeared as soloist with Helsinki Philharmonic, Swedish Radio Symphony, Royal Stockholm Philharmonic, Odense Symphony, Norrköping Symphony, Malmö Symphony, Southern Jutland Symphony, Sundsvall Chamber Orchestra, Helsingborg Symphony, Jönköping Symphony Orchestra, Umeå Sinfonietta, among others.Elsewhere he has appeared as concerto soloist with the Los Angeles Mozart Orchestra, Savannah Symphony, Akron Symphony, Asheville Symphony, Texas Festival Orchestra, Midland-Odessa Symphony, Ventura Symphony, Israeli Chamber Orchestra, and Taegu Symphony Orchestra. Conductors with whom Rosengren has collaborated include Esa-Pekka Salonen, Neeme Järvi, Christopher Hogwood, Pascal Verrot, Osmo Vänskä, Jan Krenz, Matthias Aeschbacher, Okko Kamu, Sakari Oramo, Eiji Oue, Charles Olivieri-Munroe, Jorma Panula, Stig Westerberg, Göran W. Nilsson, Ekkehard Klemm, Miroslaw Jacek Blaszczyk, Bohumil Kulinsky, David Parry, Boguslaw Dawidow, Vladimir Fedoseyev, Agniezska Duczmal, Leif Segerstam, Edvard Serov, John Storgårds, Matts Liljefors, Lucinda Carver, Robert Hart Baker, Boris Brott, Kazufumi Yamashita, among others. Concerto appearances have taken Rosengren from Berlin, Belfast, Bratislava to Tel Aviv, Umeå, Vilnius and he has performed much of the repertoire for clarinet and orchestra including concertos by Mozart, Nielsen, Weber, Copland, Bernhard Crusell, Ludwig Spohr, Debussy, Lutoslawski, and Lars Erik Larsson. Premiere performances include concerto commissions for Rosengren by composers Anders Eliasson, Jan Sandström, Henrik Strindberg, Martin Willert, and Alexander Lason.Since his debut on the American recital stage to rave reviews in New York City’s Merkin Hall in 1988, Rosengren has performed in recital throughout the United States, Europe, Israel, and Asia, and he has performed in music festivals around the world, such as Warsaw Autumn, Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival, La Jolla Chamber Music Festival, Ojai Music Festival, Moritzburg (Dresden) Chamber Music Festival, Beethoven Spring Music Festival (Krakow), Haifa (Israel) Music Festival, Methow Valley (Seattle) Chamber Music Festival, Sandviken (Sweden) Chamber Music Festival, Taegu (South Korea) Contemporary Music Festival, Odense Music Festival, Louisiana Contemporary Music Festival (Copenhagen), Varberg (Sweden) International Chamber Music Festival, Rybna (Poland) Castle Festival, “Chamber Unlimited” Stockholm International Chamber Music Festival, Krakow Contemporary Music Festival, Beijing Clarinet Festival, Porto Clarinet Festival, Krakow International Messiaen Festival, and the International Festival Institute at Round Top (Texas). Currently Rosengren is on the artist faculty at International Festival-Institute at Round Top, Texas. Berlin Neue Zeit called Rosengren’s playing “sensitive, lingering, colorful tone, and with his magical, light technique.” He “combines a facile virtuosity with a sensitive musicality that permits him to reinvent his performance each evening.” (24 Heures, Lausanne Switzerland) “So effortless was the artistry that Rosengren and his pianist seemed to enjoy performing the concert as much as the crowd loved listening to it.” (Cleveland Plain Dealer) Rosengren’s repertoire includes all the traditional works for clarinet solo and chamber music—he has performed the Messiaen Quartet for the End of Time on at least 50 occasions throughout the world—and he is a champion of new music. Composers who have written and dedicated works to Rosengren include Poul Ruders, Anders Eliasson, Jan Sandström, Henrik Strindberg, Alexander Lason, Martin Willert, and Nikola Resanovic.Rosengren earned degrees from the Royal College of Music in Stockholm, Royal Flemish Conservatory in Antwerp, Belgium and University of California, and his teachers include Mitchell Lurie, James Kanter and Walter Boeykens. He has received grants and awards from the Swedish Royal Academy of Music, the Swedish Arts Council, the Fulbright Commission and the Scandinavia America Foundation, and has won First Prize in the Los Angeles Arts Council Competition, First Prize in UNESCO’s International Performer Competition, First Prize in Concert Artists Guild International New York Competition, the Solo Recitalists Fellowship from the (United States) National Endowment for the Arts, and selection for the Nordic Soloist Biennial. Rosengren has given masterclasses throughout Europe—Lithuanian Academy of Music (Vilnius), Kaunas (Lithuania) Conservatory of Music, Stockholm College of Music, Lisbon Academy of Music, Lisbon Conservatory, Poznan Academy of Music, Gothenburg Conservatory of Music, Malmö Conservatory of Music, Bratislava Academy of Music, among others—and the United States, for example at the Cleveland Institute of Music, Baylor University, University of Texas Austin, University of Southern California, University of California Los Angeles, University of Michigan Ann Arbor, University of Colorado, Northwestern University, University of Wisconsin Madison—as well as the Rubin Academy (Tel Aviv). Rosengren was a member of the 2003 Munich International Clarinet Competition Jury and has judged competitions in Italy, Portugal, Sweden, and the United States. Rosengren can be heard in recordings on CD Accord, Caprice, Musica Sveciae, Roundtop Records, and in Nielsen’s Clarinet Concerto with Esa-Pekka Salonen on Sony Classical. His recording of Messiaen’s Quartet for the End of Time on CD Accord was nominated for the Polish Frederyk Award and his Crusell recording on Caprice was nominated for the Swedish Grammy. Håkan Rosengren performs on Rico Grand Concert Select Evolution clarinet reeds, James Kanter mouthpiece, and Buffet Tosca clarinets.
