Theodore Oien

Principal Clarinet, Detroit Symphony Orchestra (retired)

Theodore Oien has been principal clarinetist of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra since 1988. After studies with Richard Waller and Robert Marcellus, he received Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. A concerto soloist with the Detroit Symphony at Orchestra Hall and Meadow Brook, Mr. Oien has performed Copland’s Clarinet Concerto under the composer and participated in the 1999 Lincoln Center concert featuring principal players from major orchestras of fifty nations, honoring the 50th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. He has recorded extensively for Chandos with the Detroit Symphony under Neeme Järvi and appeared as featured artist at the 1994 and 1998 International Clarinet Association’s ClarinetFests. This past season he served as substitute clarinetist of the Bergen Wind Quintet, presenting concerts and master classes in Minnesota, Michigan, Kansas, Maryland and Washington, D.C. Mr. Oien has taught at the universities of Manitoba, Denver, Michigan, Michigan State and Wayne State; presented master classes in Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Louisiana, and Ontario; and adjudicated competitions across the U.S. and Canada. He is a long-standing artist-faculty member of Wayne State University and the Aspen Music Festival and School.Theodore Oien is a Buffet Crampon USA Performing Artist.
