Mariano REY

International solist

Mariano Rey was born in 1972 in Mar del Plata, Buenos Aires, Argentina. He received early training from Carlos A. Rey, his father, Mariano Frogioni and Martin Tow. Then, Rey continued studying the clarinet under Gui Deplus, Michael Arrignon, Stanley Drucker and chamber music with Alberto Lysy.

This Argentine concerto player has established an international profile as a leading and versatile clarinettist. Throughout his 31 years of professional experience, he was granted more than 14 awards and acknowledgements by Konex Foundation, the Association of Argentina Music Critics, Vandoren, Buffet, Mayo Bank Foundation, Argentina National Radio among others. He contested and won more than six positions, mainly as Principal Clarinet, at the Buenos Aires Colón Theatre Philarmonic Orchestra, the National Symphony Orchestra and the Mar del Plata Symphony Orchestra. Moreover, Rey gave outstanding performances with worldwide as well as well-known orchestra directors and soloists such as Zubin Mehta, Franz-Paul Decker, Charles Dutoit, Yuri Temirkanov, Robert Spano, Eiji Oue, Rossen Milanov, Daniel Barenboim, Yehudi Menuhin, Itzhak Perlman, Yo-Yo Ma, Bruno Gelber, Frederica Von Stade, Martha Argerich and Alberto Lysy.

Mariano Rey performed concertos in France, Germany, Holland, Austria, Colombia, Peru, Brazil, Uruguay, Chile and Argentina. He was invited as a guest soloist by San Petersburgo Philarmonic Orchestra and Israel Philarmonic Orchestra. Rey also stood out for his performance along with prestigious artists such as Plácido Domingo, Luciano Pavarotti, José Carreras, Lalo Schifrin, Paquito D’Rivera, Julio Bocca and the Dallas Symphony Chorus among others. Furthermore, he ran more than 40 recording projects. This year, 2014, his last two recordings are: Música Argentina para Clarinete y Orquesta which includes 5 concertos of Argentine composers and Trío Tango ZAR (Zárate-Angeleri-Rey) which displays Argentine tango and folk music.

In the field of education, Rey has developed, for more than 26 years, an intensive work on pedagogy and teaching. He was on the staff of the clarinet and saxophone departments of the Luis Gianneo Conservatoire in Mar del Plata and Manuel de Falla Conservatoire in Buenos Aires. He has also delivered conferences, and has given workshops and masterclasses on clarinet training, chamber music and orchestral repertoire both in Argentina and abroad.

Currently, Mariano Rey is a clarinet and orchestral repertoire professor at the Colón Theatre Institute of Art, a musical director of the International Clarinettist Congress of Buenos Aires, a musician at Trío Tango ZAR, and for more than 22 years he has performed as a clarinet concerto player and soloist whith the Buenos Aires Colón Theatre Philarmonic Orchestra.
